Somalomo Asset Mapping: Unlocking Local Potential for Sustainable Development in the Dja Biosphere

“Rooted in Nature, Driven by Community: Fostering Endogenous Growth in the Dja Biosphere.”

The Dja Biosphere Reserve in the East Region of Cameroon is one of Central Africa’s richest ecosystems. Supported by the African Foundation for Conservation and Development (ACDEF), local communities in the municipality of Somalomo are leveraging their endogenous potential across three key dimensions Physical Environment, Social Fabric, and Individual Capacities to foster sustainable and inclusive development.

Key Pillars of Local Assets

1. Physical Environment

Ecosystem & Soils: Dense equatorial forest with fertile soil suited for climate-smart agriculture.
Climate: Guinean type equatorial climate with two rainy and two dry seasons.
Hydrography: Surrounded by the vital Dja River network.
Tourism Sites: Schouam rock, Ndengue, Komba Tida, Agnala, Dja waterfalls, and botanical garden.
Natural Resources: Medicinal plants, endemic wildlife, sand, laterite, and stone.

2. Social Fabric

Governance: Second- and third-degree traditional chiefdoms foster strong community bonds.
Youth & Hospitality: A welcoming population composed largely of dynamic youth.
Infrastructure: District medical center, 2 integrated health centers, CETIC, high school, and primary schools.
Culture & Economy: Craft museum, modern drying facility (Nkolekoul), and collective marketing initiatives.

3. Individual Capacities

Technical Training: Cassava to tapioca processing supported by ACDEF Cameroon.
Livelihood Skills: Soap & balm making, pig farming, beekeeping, and tailoring.
Forest Resources: Valorization of Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs).
Indigenous Knowledge: Deep expertise in pharmacopoeia and traditional medicinal plants.
Scientific & Eco-Tourism: Local tour guides and research assistant capabilities.

Endogenous Development in Action

By mapping and empowering local assets from traditional pharmacopoeia to modern processing facilities like the Nkolekoul drying center the northern sector of the Dja Biosphere Reserve establishes a strong foundation for sustainable, community led growth.
